Our Goal

To provide a variety of quality recreational and educational outdoor experiences for CNCC students, focusing on strengthening leadership skills enriching relationships, and experiencing new adventures.

Trips

The Outdoor Recreation Program (ORP) plans and leads trips for students, but ORP trips involve more than just students. Staff and faculty are an integral part of facilitating, mentoring and planning trips that excite the imagination and enrich the mind. From going to the Winter X games in Aspen, to conducting scientific research in Utah caves, the ORP has a trip that will interest you. Our program is loaded with adventures for a variety of interests and ability levels. Join us as we head for the great outdoors and experience what our unique area has to offer:

The ORP also has equipment available for check out... cross country skis, snow shoes, camping gear, climbing gear, and more.

Spartan Climbing Gym

The Spartan Climbing Gym on the Rangely campus is available for students and community members. Located behind the Yeager Building the climbing gym has regular hours during the school year and has a selection of climbing shoes and harnesses available for use. ORP frequently offers Climbing Clinics for youth as part of the CNCC Community Education Program. CNCC_IceTower

Ice tower

Each winter, the ORP builds a 50' ice climbing tower on the Rangely campus. We supply boots, crampons, ice tools, helmets and harnesses as well as instruction to students interested in trying ice climbing. Students can also sign up and get credit for the ice climbing class.

Spartan Rock & Ice

The Spartan Rock & Ice Club is an organization for students interested in rock climbing and ice climbing. The student club promotes climbing trips and activities, they also host competition and put on fundraisers. Spartan Rock & Ice students also put on the Spartan Climbing Clinic teaching youth the basics of climbing.

Colorado Northwestern is one college in two Colorado communities. Depending on what you want to study, CNCC has the perfect surroundings and facilities to meet your needs. Founded in 1962 as “Rangely College,” CNCC now serves nearly 1,600 students on two campuses, two service centers and online. Our two campuses are located in Craig and Rangely and are 90 miles apart in the mountains and canyons of Northwestern Colorado.
