Colorado Northern Community College

Pre-Nursing Pathways

Completing your Prerequisites before Applying to Nursing School

Before you can be admitted into Colorado Northwestern Community College’s Nursing Program, you must show a good prerequisite completion and proficiency rate. This critical first step will become the foundation of your nursing school educational experience and future career.

Here are CNCC, we provide students with two pathways by which they may complete their prerequisites and apply to the nursing school program. Both pathways include the same coursework requirements, but they have different standards through which these requirements can be met.

Competitive Admission Pathway

This pathway is for students who have completed their course work at another college, or through online/virtual methods. This pathway allows students to bring in transfer credits for courses completed at another college and provides students with a more flexible timeline for completion of prerequisites.

The CNCC Competitive Admission Process admits students based on a competitive score. Competitive scoring criteria include:

  • GPA (2.8 or higher)
  • Prerequisite coursework completed at CNCC
  • Previous college degree
  • Admission Test Score -Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI - TEAS)

Applicants are evaluated using a score sheet, and individuals with the highest marks are conditionally accepted into the Nursing Program each fall. Final approval is based on a successful background check, drug screening, and submission of immunization records.

Guaranteed Admission Program

Welcome to CNCC's Guaranteed Admission Program in Nursing. Nursing schools across the nation have competitive entry making it uncertain after you have completed your pre-requisites that you will even be admitted into the program. The Guaranteed Admission program is designed so when you are taking your pre-requisites, we “save your spot” so you can immediately jump right into the nursing program.

  • Enrollment Period: September through March
  • Letter of Intent & Pre-Term Advising Deadline: March 15

This pathway is designed for students who will be completing the majority of their course work at a CNCC campus. This pathway has specific terms and conditions for applicants but provides a more consistent flow from pre-nursing to nursing courses.

Anyone is eligible to declare intent to enter the Guaranteed Admission process. All interested applicants must fill out the Guaranteed Admissions Letter of Intent and return it to Nursing by March 15th of the semester before you intend to start your pre-requisites. Entry into the nursing program will require students to submit to a criminal background check and drug screening. Click here for a list CCCS disqualifying offenses. Nursing students are also required to have certain minimum functional abilities. Review both prior to declaring into the Guaranteed Admissions program.

1. Letter of Intent: Student must declare intent to participate in the program by submitting a Guaranteed Admission Program Letter of Intent and declaring a one- or two-year pathway to the Nursing Program Coordinator, by March 15th of the year/term prior to beginning the Guaranteed Admission program at CNCC.

  • 1-year pathway students will start in the summer term the year before they plan to apply to nursing school. (i.e., For a fall 2026 entry, students will start classes in summer 2025)
  • 2-year pathway students will start their first term on GA in the fall two years before their intended application to nursing school. (i.e., For a fall 2027 entry, students will start classes in fall 2025)

2. College Readiness in Math & English: Student must demonstrate college readiness in English, Math and Reading through placement testing (Guided Self-Assessment Survey, ACT or SAT) to be eligible for participation in the Guaranteed Admission Program.

3. Grades & GPA: Guaranteed admission into CNCC's Nursing Program is dependent upon an earned grade point average of 2.8 or higher on all (5) prerequisite courses and general education courses applicable to the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing.

  • Students must maintain a 'B' average in all required prerequisite courses, a single grade of 'C' is permitted, provided the overall GPA for prerequisite courses remains at or above 2.8.
  • Students must pass and complete every course they are registered for while in the GA program.
  • Classes may not be repeated to earn more points.
  • A received grade of a “D” or “F” will result in automatic dismissal of the GA program.
  • A withdrawal (W) or an administrative drop (AD) is equivalent to a failure.

All classes must be complete and meet the above standards by the end of spring semester preceding admission to the Nursing Program.

4. Required Coursework: There are 5 main prerequisite courses that students MUST complete to be eligible to apply to the Nursing Program, BIO 2101, BIO 2102, BIO 2104, ENG 1021 and PSY 2440. These courses must be completed at a CNCC campus (Craig, Rangely, Concurrent) to be eligible for the GA track. Other general education courses applicable to the AAS in Nursing may be taken through CNCC in-person, hybrid or virtual delivery. No online courses will be accepted for prerequisites. Online courses for general education and/or BIO 1010/1111 MUST be pre-approved by the Associate Dean of Allied Health and/or the Nursing Program Director.

5. Transfer Credits: A maximum of nine (9) general education credits will be accepted in transfer under the Guaranteed Admission Program. The 5 main prerequisite courses (BIO 2101, BIO 2102, BIO 2104, ENG 1021 and PSY 2440) will NOT be accepted as transfer credit for the GA track. Prerequisite courses must be completed at a CNCC campus for GA eligibility. Transfer credit for BIO 1010/1111, may be accepted but must be first be evaluated and approved by the Associate Dean of Allied Health and/or the Nursing Program Director.

6. Student Standing & Conduct: Student must be in good academic standing to be admitted to the Nursing Program. Any form of academic disciplinary action will result in loss of position in the Nursing program.

7. Application Requirements for GA Students: Students in the GA Program must submit a Nursing School Application, a Personal Information Sheet, a letter of self-recommendation and take the TEAS test prior to being admitted into the CNCC Nursing Program. Students must receive a score of proficient or better on the TEAS test administered by ATI. TEAS score must have been received within the 12 months preceding admission into the CNCC Nursing Program.

Any student who fails to meet the above listed terms and conditions will not be granted guaranteed admission into the Nursing Program. However, the student may still apply to the CNCC Nursing program through the competitive application process and compete with other applicants for a position in the program.
