Listed below are the objectives of each dimension, recommendations on activities of which you can choose to engage, and services and activities provided by Colorado Northwestern.  

Emotional wellness is understanding your own feelings and expressing emotions in a constructive way. It is also the ability to manage stress and cope with life's challenges.

Recommendation to Students: How to foster Emotional Wellness:

  • Learn relaxation and stress management techniques.
  • Cultivate an awareness of your thoughts and feelings through mind-body tools and programs.
  • Develop confidence in your abilities.
  • Practice expressing both negative and positive feelings constructively, with assertive communication.  
  • Take responsibility for and learn from your decisions, without self-critical thoughts.

Environmental wellness involves recognizing the interactions between your environment, your community, and yourself.

Recommendation to Students: How to foster Environmental Wellness:

  • Cultivate environments that support well-being at every opportunity (e.g., when you're hosting a party).
  • Call out disrespectful or harassing behaviors and comments that create a negative social environment.
  • Use the health, wellness and safety resources available to you 
  • Practice environmentally conscious behaviors (e.g., recycling, energy and water conservation).
  • Volunteer your time in the community to make things better. Identify what the community or organization needs rather than what you wish to provide.

Financial Wellness is making responsible decisions to live within your means and setting financial goals today that will positively impact your financial future.

Recommendation to Students: How to foster financial wellness

  • Obtain personalized budgeting assistance, information about your financial aid award notification and bill, and much more.
  • Check out the Office of Financial Aid’s cncc.edu/financial-aid-information-links to learn about applying for aid, developing a financial plan while in college, learning financial aid terminology, loan responsibility, and standards of progress to maintain financial aid.
  • Making responsible decisions to live within your means and setting financial goals today that will positively impact your financial future.
  • Find out about food, housing, child care, clothing, health care and other services that that may be offered free or reduced in cost in order to help you balance your budget.

Intellectual wellness is engaging in creative and mentally stimulating activities, expanding your knowledge and imparting knowledge to others.

Recommendations to Students: How to foster Intellectual wellness:

  • Listen to and consider the perspectives of others to improve critical thinking.
  • Attend conferences, talks and programs that increase your knowledge in various areas.
  • Seek opportunities to learn practical skills that you or a friend might need
  • Learn how to read music, play an instrument or learn a new sport
  • Improve knowledge learned in class through tutoring, individual research or mentoring
  • Participate in a new activity or group on campus to stay open-minded and expand your horizons.
  • Pursue off-campus opportunities to experience a new language or culture.

Occupational wellness is finding fulfillment from your work and study, contributing meaningfully, and continuing to expand your skills and strengths.

Recommendations to Students: How to foster occupational wellness:

  • Identify a major and career choice that suits your interests, aptitude and life goals. Also identify where you wish to transfer if a bachelors and beyond is your goal.
  • Look for opportunities to use your talents and skills to contribute positively to the world around you.
  • Make it a priority to find paid and volunteer opportunities that interest you.
  • Learn skills that will help you accomplish your goal, such as time management, study skills, communication, presenting and writing, and project management.
  • Identify and reduce occupational and academic stress.
  • Find a balance between school/work and leisure time.
  • Develop a sample resume and cover letter and practice interviewing skills that show you in the best light

CNCC Programs and Services

 

Physical wellness comes from making choices to avoid harmful habits and practice actions that support your physical body, health and safety.

Recommendation to Students: How to foster physical Wellness:

  • Obtain prompt care for injuries and illnesses.
  • Obtain support from the department of Campus/Student life if you are struggling with paying for meals, clothes, transportation, housing, or childcare
  • Develop an exercise regiment that is comfortable for you and consistent
  • Practice good self-care consistently, like eating foods that fuel your body, moving your body regularly and getting enough sleep.
  • Practice behaviors that support your immune system and prevent illness (e.g., hand-washing, getting immunizations).
  • Take care of your sexual and reproductive health (e.g., using barrier methods during sexual activity, getting regular exams) 
  • Pay attention to and support your emotional wellness.
  • Limit your use of alcohol, if you choose to drink at all.
  • Avoid tobacco products and other drugs; take medications only as prescribed.

CNCC Programs and Services

  • All full time CNCC students have access to a local health and fitness center. At the Rangely Campus the center is at the Western Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation District’s Rec Center https://westernrioblancomrpd.colorado.gov/rec-center and in Craig, it is at Trapper’s Fitness https://www.trapperfitness.com
  • All students have access to free counseling/behavioral health telehealth services. Please reach out to your academic advisor or Campus Life staff members for additional information and to schedule an appointment.
  • Rangely hospital provides on-site medical clinic service at CNCC’s Rangely campus each Wednesday from 11am to 3pm in the Johnson bldg.
  • Students requiring teeth cleaning or dental hygiene check ups can schedule appointments at CNCC’s with a faculty member and students at its Dental Hygiene Program https://cncc.edu/appointments-patient-info

Social wellness refers to the quality of the relationships you have and how you interact with others.

Recommendation to Students: How to foster social wellness:

  • Build trust and show support in relationships with friends, family members and significant others.
  • Learn how to communicate effectively with others and understand your communication style. 
  • Reflect on personal conflicts and identify areas for improvement.
  • Respect the needs and wants of others, and yourself. 
  • Make it a point to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, beliefs and cultures.
  • Join a club, team, or group on campus.

Spiritual wellness refers to having values or beliefs that provide a sense of meaning and purpose to your life, and considering whether your actions align with your values. You can also take time to connect with something bigger than yourself. 

Recommendation to Students: How to foster spiritual wellness:

  • Be curious about the world around you and the life experiences you encounter, through mindfulness techniques.
  • Make time for personal reflection and defining your personal values (e.g., meditation, yoga).
  • Actively care for the welfare of others in the CNCC and surrounding community and act with compassion.
  • Behave in ways that are congruent with your values and beliefs.
  • If you are religious, find a faith community or activity you are comfortable with and participate on a regular basis. 
  • Select work that gives you meaning and allows you to motivate, influence and support others.

Colorado Northwestern is one college in two Colorado communities. Depending on what you want to study, CNCC has the perfect surroundings and facilities to meet your needs. Founded in 1962 as “Rangely College,” CNCC now serves nearly 1,600 students on two campuses, two service centers and online. Our two campuses are located in Craig and Rangely and are 90 miles apart in the mountains and canyons of Northwestern Colorado.
